Seeing colours

So I went out for a beer last night and I raised a question to which has no answer. Maybe that sounds pointless but it's interesting to think about abstract concepts sometimes. So the question runs along the lines of whether everyone perceives the world in the same way or are there differences. For example colours, is the red that I see the same as the red that you see?. We both see red and know that it's red, it's red, but is it the same red? It's a question that cannot be answered because it's impossible to reproduce an objective view on reality as each reality is created by each individual and is very subjective. In other news the tax depratment sux and I'm in Wroclaw for a week and a half. Going back to Munich on the 2nd of May. Oh and the world is supposed to end in 2012 which really puts a dark cloud over the Euro Championships in Poland that year.

Easter is coming up. In Germany Friday and Monday are public holidays so it's a 4 day long weekend. Sounds great to me, I can't wait. My girl Aga is coming to Munich over easter, she'll be for a week sounds even better to me. Although it means I'll have to stop the wild parties I think it's worth it. It's funny, if someone had told me a few years ago that I would now be working as a PM in Munich for an online shopping comparison portal I would have never believed it, but there you go. I don't even want to think ahead as anything is possible... lets hope it involves lots of money. ;)

Another trip to wroclaw comes to an end in typically polish syle. The weekend was quite nice, a well deserved rest, something I definetly needed.

As I wound my way solo through the badly designed crowd control barrier which took about 5 mins to move 5 meters. I considered if the security would say anything about the frozen sphagetti sauce my dad cooked for me. I thought of course not, however I was very wrong. At first when the bastard told me I can't take it onto the plane i thought he was joking but no he said i was not allowed to take any liquids onto the flight. After i pointed out its not a liquid he said its because i am not allowed to take any homemade foods onto the plane. first time i have ever heard of sphagetti refered to as a liquid.

Unfortunetly there is no lack of stupid people with even a small amount of authority who think they are the king of all they see. It pisses me off but there really isnt much i can do about it. Why dont they make these dumb pricks take personity tests? They are all so stuck up.

Riddles!!

I have a couple of riddles for you. Why are manhole covers round? That's strictly speaking not a riddle but it's a good way to find out how someone goes about solving problems.

Another riddle that recived much discussion around the office was a riddle about a plane on a conveyor belt. So the questions is; is it possible for a plane to take off if it is sitting on a conveyor belt that is moving at the same speed as the plane but in the opposite direction? For example the plane is moving forward at 20 km per hour so the belt is moving in the opposite direction at 20 km per hour. Is it possible for the plane to take off? I wont tell u the answer of these. Feel free to email me your suggested answers though.

A fresh start

So its a new week and I plan to start things fresh. But what does that mean? I seem to say this every week, I will start to exercise more, eat healthier food, not go out so much but the fact is that I am so exhausted after work that I just can't resist a nice cold weissbier. it's not so bad though, I walk to work when I get up in time and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. But still the money I am spending going out isn't so good. I could and should be spending this money on exercise and this is exactly what i am planning to do. Squash with a work friend at least once a week. We'll see how long it lasts.

The viscious cycle of lazyness

I have been noticing that my day is shorter. I seem to not have enough time for anything including seemingly simple things like doing the dishes or writing a blog entry. So as the number of activities I do after work gets smaller so does the time available to me. At least that is my perception. Its an interesting phenomena, obviously the amount of time I have in the day remains the same and in fact I have more time but it appears to be less.

I call this the viscious cycle of lazyness due to the fact that if i feel like i have less time to do anything then i am less likely to actually do anything and thus have the impression that i have no time to do what it is i want to do.

So the question is how to get out of this? Unfortunetly if i had the simple answer then i wouldnt be writing this. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this?

As the title suggests, it's coooold here. the forecast puts the temperature to drop to -15 by monday. At the moment it's a blistering -5 degrees, it's quite windy and it's snowing. so it's very unpleasant to be outside.

My Skiing Trip

Ok another big break from writing anything, thanks for the 2 people that visited my blog over the weekend, respect ;). While you were checking out my cool Christmas tree, I went skiing! It was at a place called Rzeczka and all I can say is that it was fantastic fun. I wish I had some photos but unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me.

The weather was great with the temperature being about -2 degrees, it was sunny and the views were just amazing. The snow cover was nice, basically all the conditions were ideal, apart from one; the number of people. There was just too many of them. It took about 4 mins to ride down (it's a relatively short slope) and the wait in line was about 20-30 mins long!...

This was my second time skiing (I last went about 4 years ago) and even though I can hardly be called an expert, I don't think I did too badly. I fell over a good number of times, but in my opinion if you don't fall over, you're not pushing yourself. Ok that's my justification anyway.

I find it quite strange that a joke that can work well in one language just sounds stupid in another. Every language has it's own style of humor I guess. As an example, below are two jokes, both rather crude, the first is a translation from polish, the second is an english joke. Polish humor has definetly got a different feel about it than english humor. Translated Polish joke:

A young couple, soon to be married meet with a priest to discuss how much they should pay for the marriage ceremony. The young man says, "How much should I pay?" to which the priest replies, "Look at the woman you chose and decide for yourself how much you wish to offer." The man reaches inside his wallet and pulls out $100 and hands it to the priest. The priest then reaches inside his wallet and gives the man $50 change.

In an endeavor to make poland a more user-friendly tourist town, the local government has decided to encourage clubs to have more descriptive names. For example, if you want to go out and have a good time, you would go to... Good Times, if you want to have fun, you would go to... The Fun Club or if you just wanted a nice easy night out, you would go to... The Chill Out Club... Which is actually quite a good chilled out place. Other examples are; Radio Bar if you want to listen to the radio, Cafe & Drink Bar for a coffee and drink, Guinness Pub if you feel like a Guinness, The Tavern for a Tavern, Heaven if you want to go to heaven and of course... From Dusk Till Dawn if you want to be locked in a strip club and forced to fight off vampires. Ok, the last one is really just a translation and isn't really a strip club. It's a rock bar, so I'm surprised it's not called, The Rock Bar, although the name was probably taken already.

The Question (GEEK ALERT!)

Finally, after 2 days I have sound!! The Question, the most important question our generation has to face, the answer to this question will impact the very foundations of future generations. Ok, so that may be a bit dramatic, but to a certain extent it's true. The Question, Microsoft or Linux? In a society that's relying on technology and computer systems more and more, the question of whether systems should be based on a Penguin called Tux or some colorful squares is quite important. But I don't want to talk about big systems, the reason I am bringing this topic up is that recently I decided my laptop needs a makeover and that Windows ME just doesn't cut it (which is true whatever side of the argument you are on, it's just a shitty OS). I have a Toshiba 3000-100 which is a pretty fantastic laptop that shipped with Windows ME. So I decided to install Gentoo, which is a distribution or version of Linux, I had previously installed Gentoo on my old Celeron 450 to be used as a router and have a small number of server functions. This wasn't too difficult and took a couple of days to get up and fully running. It may seem like a long time, however I was compiling all sources and I could only really work on setting it up after work, so I think it was a reasonable amount of time. Installing Gentoo on my laptop was a totally different matter because on my server I didn't have to worry about small details like graphics, sound. Getting everything running on my laptop has caused me many, many headaches. One of the advantages of Linux is that pretty much everything can be tweaked, changed, optimized, molded. I'm far from being an expert on Linux however, it occurs to me that if I have trouble with my basic knowledge, I can't imagine how difficult it would be for someone who has no knowledge in computers. It took me 2 days of googleing and trial and error to get my laptop to play a nice tune when I start it up! I still have trouble when it comes to shutting down the computer, the screen goes black and just hangs there, no errors, nothing, just a black screen. It's really frustrating. After 2 weeks of installing Gentoo on my laptop it's almost at a basic stage where I have nice graphics, nice sound and some other basic features. There must be an easier way? There is, it's called Microsoft. I'm not talking about Windows ME, I'm talking about specifically Windows XP. Windows XP has it's problems, most of them caused by Linux nerds who write viruses that attack windows systems to show how insecure it is. The good thing about XP is that it just works, I installed it on my laptop and it just works, in a couple of hours I was up and running, graphics, sound, internet games, everything just worked, ok so it's 5% slower than Linux and costs a stupid amount of money but it's convenient. Which is why people prefer it. I like to think myself neutral in this question Windows or Linux, I think that both systems have their place. Even Macs have their place, every door needs a stopper and ever paper needs a weight. For now after all my effort, I'll stick to Gentoo and we'll see what it has to offer. A while ago I posted pictures of the cow parade in Prague and I was saying how Wroclaw has it's own version. Well... this is it, personally I think this is much better than those cows. For starters the animals are symbolic, ok maybe it's not a pleasant history for the aminals, but it's still more than the cows have. The little street where these animas are is now the artisic district full of art galleries and artists. They are symbolic of the fact that this is where the butchers were in the olden days. I really think the animals would have prefered the olden days. Two metal pigs, a goose which has just dumped an egg, a goat which has just dumped something else and a bunny.

ok, ok... I know it's been ages since my last post and there has been HEAPS happening lately, not all good, just stuff ;) maybe I'll get around to listing some. This Unkymoods thing I have on my page is a good idea, however the problem with it is that it's never going to be very accurate considering I change it once a day at best. I'll try and update it more often. Now for a joke.........

And so we return to the start. After an embarrassing long delay in writing this blog, we can get back to the start of the vacation for a short stay in Warszawa, otherwise known as The Stolica. Personally, I never liked the capital, to me, it never had the same character as other cities in Poland. It seems to be all business, business, business, sucking the life out of the rest of the country like a huge polluted leech. But I guess this is what capitals are, if it was any different, then it wouldn't be a capital. That said, I do think it's a pretty city as you will see from the photos, and there are many renovations happening which will make it the kick ass best city ever in Europe. It will take many years for this to become a reality of course, until then please enjoy the photos HERE. Of course, this leaves the question. Which do you prefer, Chocolate, Peanut or Crunchy m&m's?. Rocks and Cows and iPod

My last getaway from the daily iPod grind took me to two places, the First of which was a couple of days in our iPod beautiful capital, Warsaw, the second was a week in the majestic city of Prague and the third was a week in the supprisingly iPod touristy city of Amsterdam. This weeks gallery is from Prague, hence the name of this post, isn't it obvious? Ok maybe not so obvious, Prague really is a very pretty city iPod and although I think I would like to go back there some time in the future, I definetly think that one week is too long to spend looking at Rocks and Cows and generally it can be covered in, say 3 nights. "CowParade is the world’s largest public art event." Prague has been invaded? by cows. Or rather statues of cows donated by people, why? I don't know, if anyone has any ideas please let me know ( actually don't, I don't care ) but it's an interesting idea, Wroclaw has it's own artsy animal statues, a goat, duck and pig I think I'm not sure, I'll have to take a photo and post it up next time. I iPod assumed that prague would be primarily a party city, I was wrong, it's full of cows. Failing on prague being a party city I thought, yea, great, I'll experience some culture. The Czech National Museum is full of rocks and fish, I guess it's good for geologists and marine biologists, however for me, kinda dull. I did get iPod some nice photos from the museum though. The slightly more interesting museum in Prague is related to the national hobby, Pimpin here is a link. Anyway, in summary, Prague is a great city for sights, not for nightlife. Of course I stayed around the centre of town, as most toursits will I suppose, it's possible that the life outside the centre is very different. So anyway after all the BS, the gallery is HERE. Oh and I almost forgot, as a continuing effort to get as many anonymous clicks from web searches, I have cleverly placed the word iPod in this post. I wonder if it works, No I don't have an iPod and I don't know if iPods are any good, I suggest you search for iPod on google to get a good idea on iPods.

Amsterdam photos, maybe I'll write something later, for now the gallery is HERE. Ok, I've decided to write a few more words about, hmm, what should I write about. Well you might be wondering what Brussels best known monument has to do with Amsterdam. Well I only recently found out what Manneken Pis is, before then I thought it was an amusing name for a chip shop. To me this place really stood out as it had a huuuge mountain of uncooked fries, just waiting to be boiled in oil for the next pot head to come by. The snacks and junk food industry is truly booming in Amsterdam, where in England you will have a pub on every street corner, in Amsterdam there is a MacDonalds. On a side note about snacks, for anyone who hasn't tried, Mayo on chips is really quite nice, however I wouldn't bother making a special trip to Amsterdam for this, the Mayo there is kinda average. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great either, but maybe I was looking in the wrong places. So what would you go to Amsterdam for? Culture? perhapps, there are some nice museums there, visiting the Van Gogh is a good idea if you're into his art, however, it was a mistake for me I think, I found it quite boring and have decided that I don't understand fine art. I guess someone will have to explain it to me. The architecture is quite interesting, some of the buildings have even been designed to lean over time ;) but I guess most people, toursists go there for the red light district and the drugs. If you ask, most Australians will tell you, yup, the grasshopper mate, defiently the grasshopper... in my limited experience, the grasshopper was pretty shitty and was quite expencive. Generally Amsterdam was supprising, I didn't imagine it would be as toursity and family oriented as it was, and I didn't imagine that there would be less of a party atmosphere than in Prague. However, this was pretty much the case as most people were stoned and the alcohol was expencive, so there was not much to do, apart from look at the pretty ladies in the windows. ;) Anyway if you didn't get the link before, HERE. it is again. Ever since I was a little boy I loved the transformers cartoons, they were excellent. Not the crappy ones we have now, e.g. Beast Wars... WTF were they thinking?????? Is this a dump truck or is it Dumptruck, new Autobot with super hyper mega smell cannon! available at your nearest store?. No, it's just a dump truck and for some reason the trash company in poland is called Trans-Formers, I realise I'm new to this Country but it does seem like a strange choice, maybe someone can explain it to me? What does this have to do with the photo gallery of my friends (Mareks) house warming party? well not much, I took this photo becasue I have seen these trucks around at night (very suspicious) and I've wanted to get a photo for the longest time but have never had my camera with me (and I was drunk at the time so it seemed like the best idea).
